Auschwitz was one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi fatality camps to the American people; this is, as the New York Overview of Books said, "the best quick profile of the Auschwitz experience available." When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they dispatched virtually the whole Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a physician, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared fatality for a grimmer destiny: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Loss of life" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was known as Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also dished up as medical professional to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who did the trick only in the crematoriums and were routinely carried out after four weeks. Miraculously, Nyiszli survived to give this horrifying and sobering profile.
