Alexander Pushkin's biggest short tale. Hermann, a German officer portion in the Designers regiment, is obsessed by gaming, although he never indulges in it himself. One nighttime he hears an account about how exactly a wealthy 87-year-old Countess in St. Petersburg once discovered the trick of how to win on three credit cards from the Duc d'Orleans. He becomes enthusiastic about learning the trick himself. In pursuit of this aim, he becomes enamoured of the Countess' associate, the beautiful Lizaveta. A nocturnal trip to his paramour, however, becomes to tragedy as he discovers himself in the chamber of the Countess and tries first by persuasion and then by make to get her to disclose the trick of the credit cards. The denouement of the storyplot is uncanny and captivating.
