Jack Kerouac composed The Haunted Life in 1944 when he was 22 yrs . old and attending Columbia University. Originally expected as a three-part book, only this first 20,000-word section was ever completed. Upon its completion, Kerouac rapidly lost his only hand-written final draft in a New York cab, remaining unfamiliar to the general public until its appearance at Christies about a decade back.Kerouac's family has now decided to show this manuscript with the earth. As the entirety of the book remained unfinished, the surviving manuscript effectively works by itself as a novella with a gratifying, if open-ended, conclusion. It features a scaled-down version of the Martin family and is defined in Lowell, Massachusetts, as was Kerouac's first book The Town and The City. Kerouac had planned on writing a pattern of books tentatively entitled An American Passed Here, which was to be establish primarily in the fictional town of Galloway (based on Lowell). That pattern was to contain The Haunted Life and The Sea is My Brother, tracing the storyplot of the Martin family throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Eventually Kerouac's ideas for his Martin pattern materialized into his first book, The Town and the town, soon before he shifted to compose his iconic On the street.Todd Tietchen, the editor of the project and the Jack port Kerouac/Beat Scholar in dwelling at the College or university of Massachusetts at Lowell, has built a number of archival documents to thicken out the context of the lost novella, documents that attest to the amount of intention and treatment that travelled into Kerouac's writing projects.
