November, 1583. Desperate not to allow Protestant Low Countries land in to the hands of the Catholic Spain, the Queen's spymaster, Francis Walsingham, purchases Cambridge scholar and beginner spy, Christopher Marlowe, to aid the beleaguered Dutch head, William the Silent, whose judge is a hotbed of intrigue and treachery. However, going in disguise as part of a troupe of Egyptian players, Marlowe encounters trouble even before he extends to Dutch shores. When the players make a detour to perform at the home of the Queen's magus, Dr John Dee, one with their tricks leads to tragedy - and an arrest for murder. Costed with protecting the Dutch head from his enemies within, Marlowe decides to unmask a cold-blooded killer much nearer to home.
