In 1886, Ruler Ludwig II, the Ruler of Bavaria, was deposed on grounds of mental incapacity without the medical assessment. His "diagnosis" remains controversial among historians even today. Soon after his fall season from power, Ludwig perished under incomprehensible circumstances, leaving the eccentric and beautiful "fairytale" castles he previously built as his only staying legacy. While putting away books from an real estate sale purchase, rare book-dealer Steven Lukas detects a pack he's never seen before wedged between books on a higher shelf. In it he discovers what looks to be a small diary written entirely in code, a lock of hair, and old photos of the Fairytale Ruler. It isn't long however, before his enjoyment turns to dread as he realizes that incomprehensible others want the diary too - and will apparently get rid of to obtain it. Suspecting that his find may contain the secret real truth behind Ludwig's death, Steven consults with art historian Sara Lengfeld. Soon they end up on the run together, looking into each of Ludwig's three castles for clues as to just what in that traditional diary could be so explosive as to be worth eliminating - and even dying - for.
