There are hundreds of books on management. That is not just another book about what makes a highly effective manager. Learning to be a Better Boss highlights why well-known advice on good management is so seldom heeded. By focusing on management through the eye of a worker, Julian Birkinshaw provides us insightful and helpful advice on what we might do in a different way - both as individual professionals of others, and as architects of the organizations where we work. To do this, Birkinshaw has put in time working "in the trenches" to remind himself what life as a worker feels like, as well as interviewed hundreds of employees and professionals and undertaken research that have received replies in the hundreds. The resulting booklet is a radical new look at what makes good management which is applicable to both administrator and employee. It requires managers out of their safe place and shows how you can do things in a different way. It shows how the employee can help themselves be managed more effectively and explores the constraints and pathologies of the organizations we benefit. Julian Birkinshaw is Teacher and Couch of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School. He has PhD and MBA diplomas running a business from the Richard Ivey School of Business, College or university of European Ontario, and a BSc (Hons) from the College or university of Durham. He was honored an Honorary Doctorate by the Stockholm School of Economics, 2009. Teacher Birkinshaw's main area of expertise is in the strategy and management of large multinational companies, and on such specific issues as corporate and business entrepreneurship, development, subsidiary-headquarters relationship, knowledge management, network organizations, and global customer management.
