British article writer Butler has built a grim story that unsuccessfully blends murder with sociable commentary. In 1946, recently advertised detective-constable John Coffin will come in Greenwich to take up his post. Soon after, the body of a young female floats down the Thames to South London. It quickly becomes clear that this is no regular murder: the sufferer has been strangled, stabbed and mutilated. Attached to the body is an email reading "Present for my mother," a mention of former celebrity Rachel Esthart, whose kid drowned under strange circumstances 17 years previously, and who have just received a postcard encouraging an imminent surprise from the youngster, whose death she has never recognized. Then two other bodies are located in the river, murdered in the same brutal way.
