2 hundred thirty-two poems, 232 reports of life, from beginning to death, domestic bliss to domestic violence, politics stupidity to flatulent bus travelers, party, mourning, pleasure, sadness... Poetry in this data-saturated era is not, for some, a practical way to make a living. Why expend enough time and energy to set-up something that few people will listen to and even fewer will purchase? To which I must ask, why do people sing in the torrential rain, paint pictures, boogie? Since it provides pleasure and reward and perhaps even retains them sane. As a author of fiction and nonfiction, I am most worried about story. AS I write poetry, I notice much less some lofty literary tool to fool or condescend, but as a fitness in crafting history within the strictest confines. White Trash & Southern is a assortment of such exercises, spanning almost three decades. To make a complex history within a limited quantity of words - to communicate far more than appears - is a problem that can offer enormous reward and satisfaction. Sometimes I succeed.
