Suspended from publication in the U.S. due to its mature subject material, Solomon's Vineyard is a tense, hard-boiled work starring Karl Craven, a non-nonsense dude who predates detectives like Lew Archer and Mike Hammer. Craven is out to save a wealthy heiress from a twisted cult. The novel's famous opening passage: "From the way her buttocks appeared under the black silk dress, I recognized she'd be good in bed. The silk was limited and under it the muscles worked slow-moving and easy. I noticed weight there, and control, and, sibling, those are things I love in a female. I put down my handbags and went after her along the station program" - clarifies why this was too hot for local publication. (In the beginning posted in 1941 in the UK, a seriously bowdlerized version arrived in the '50s, however the less said about this one the better.)
