In 13th century Europe, political turmoil is the order of the day and the Fool's Guild and its own realtors - jesters, jugglers, and knaves to a guy - works behind the scenes to manipulate situations, trying to keep a balance of electric power. Theophilos, an associate of the Guild known by many brands, is still recovering from his last mission during which he was severely wounded and practically lost his life but, in the individual of Viola, found himself an apprentice and a wife. But there is no leftovers for the wicked. While he is recovering on the Dalmatian seacoast, the Guild approaches him with another mission. A crusade has been launched, with Venice as the staging ground, but some believe that Venice means to transform it to it's own ends. At the same time, there is trouble on the Byzantine throne - a pretender to the throne is gathering Western european backers. And to make things worse, all of the Guild's realtors in Constantinople have ended up out of the blue and mysteriously absent. So now, the newly hitched Theophilos and Viola must go to Constantinople to assemble information, thwart the competitors of the Guild, stop the battle, and maybe - just maybe - stay alive.
