With this sequel to Dawn, Lilith Iyapo has given birth to what appears to be a normal real human boy known as Akin. But Akin actually has five parents: a male and female human, a male and female Oankali, and a sexless Ooloi. The Oankali and Ooloi are part of alien contest that rescued humanity from a damaging nuclear war, but the price they exact is a higher one the aliens are compelled to genetically merge their varieties with other races, substantially altering both along the way. On a rehabilitated Globe, this "new" contest is emerging through real human/Oankali/Ooloi mating, but there are also "pure" humans who choose to avoid the aliens and the salvation they provide. These resisters are sterilized by the Ooloi in order that they cannot reproduce the hereditary defect that drives humanity to ruin itself, but often they are left together (unless they become violent). Once the resisters kidnap young Akin, the Oankali choose to leave the child with his captors, for he the most "human" of the Oankali children will make a decision if the resisters should get back their fertility and liberty, even though they'll only ruin themselves again. This is actually the second amount in Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis series, a robust tale of alien living.
