In the 19th century, when literature were comparatively rare and expensive, encyclopedic compendiums about taking care of households became very popular. The most notable example in this genre is Isabella Beeton's E book of Household Management, first released in 1861. 3 years later, Edward Abbott, who referred to himself as an "Australian Aristologist", released The British and Australian Cookery E book, which has the subtitle Cookery for the countless, as well as the for the 'upper ten thousand'. The author explains his intentions in the preface: "A writer of repute (Dugald Stewart) has said that cookery and the fine arts are analogous. I cannot uncover the resemblance; but I really do contend that there is affinity between hospitality and cookery, for the former would be unavailable without aid from the second option. I offer no excuse, therefore, for the publication of the small matter-of-fact focus on the cookery of present, for this will be found pretty much useful to folks in every situation in life - to the British housewife, and to her prototype in the Colonies. The next webpages will show the English and Colonial method of rendering the various articles that God has been very happy to give us for our use, healthy and wholesome, as well as palatable to your tastes." Narrated by Phil Benson, Elizabeth Chambers, David Prickett ,Sash Elliott, Peter Tucker, Sarah Backholer and Denis Daly.
