Set in the town of Milton, Team Seven follows young Andre Battel from time eight through his teenage years as he expands away from his Jamaican family, discovers genuine prowess on the hockey court, and eventually comes into a regimen of coping drugs for the neighborhood road gang, Team Seven. The story is told mainly through Andre's tone, but we also see things through the voices and things of view of his mom Ruby, a hard-working medical secretary, his aged sister Nina, his largely not-there-/usually-drunk-and-high daddy Eddie, a halfhearted reggae musician, and Reggie and Smoking, the kingpins of fighting medicine crews. What emerges is a rich portrait of the dark-colored family, a dark-colored community, and one young boy/man poised between fresh innocence and ambiguous experience.
