In 1842, Charles Dickens been to America. His reception was relatively colder than whatever usually greeted him - already an effective author in both Britain and the United States. This insufficient enthusiasm from the Us citizens was partly due to his criticism of the pirating of English books in that country and partly due to his outspoken distaste for the custom of slavery in the Southern states. He published in the preface to North american Records, 'Prejudiced I am not, rather than have been, usually than in favour of the United States. I have many friends in America. Personally i think a grateful interest in the country. I am hoping and believe it'll successfully work out a issue of the highest importance in the whole human race. To represent me as observing America with ill characteristics, coldness or animosity is merely to execute a very foolish thing, which is always an extremely easy one!' Despite this placatory shade, one North american reviewer spoke thus of North american Records: 'The most trashy...the most contemptible...the fact of balderdash, reduced to the previous drop of silliness and inanity'. Listen to the journals and judge for yourself.
