Fourteen-year-old Benny Neusner wants only 1 thing greater than a dog: for his neglectful mother to be proud of him. He hasn't abadndoned impressing his mom, but a dog is out of the question. His father and stepmother won't permit it. They don't understand how unhappy he is. He could be not really a brain like the other kids in his restorative school, and nothing at all he's attempted has ever exercised for him. Benny complies with Bess Rutledge, a 70-year-old woman who has dreamed of being successful the Westminster Dog Show all her life. Despite her decades-long career as America's top Standard Poodle breeder, she has never entered Westminster, and now she thinks she's too old. She sells off all the puppies in her once famous kennel aside from the aging champion McCreery and Breaker, McCreery's handsome, mischievous son. She offers to provide Breaker to Benny, but Benny wants a real dog, not really a sissy poodle. Benny is attracted in to the world of dog shows and becomes persuaded he has found the perfect way to get his mother's attention. If they can get Westminster with either McCreery or Breaker, he is sure she'll be proud of him finally. But first he needs to convince the reluctant Bess to come out of retirement, Benny is victorious Bess over when she recognizes a link between Benny's relationship with his mom and her own indifferent mothering when her expanded son was Benny's age group. Benny shows unpredicted ability in the show engagement ring as the two unlikely friends, Benny and Bess, contest against time to build up Breaker's credentials as a champion. They overcome a variety of troubles in the show engagement ring and at home while educating one another important lessons about people and forgiveness. Now the only questions left to choose are who will go into the engagement ring at Westminster: McCreery or Breaker? Benny or Bess? In an ending packed with surprises, dreams come true in unpredicted ways where being successful can be losing and losing is nearly perfect.
