Cahal Dunne (ka-Hal Dunn), the ever-popular Irish songwriter, musician, and entertainer adored by his peers and audiences alike, has now added "author" to his long list of achievements. In his new e book, he monitors the improvement of a young man from Cork City: choir director, music educator, and showband musician, to seminal Celtic rocker, Eurovision-acclaimed songwriter, and US-based single performer since 1983. It's a salty tale of a young man attempting to make it in recessionary Ireland, and the "troubles" in North Ireland. It had been a hell of a period to go for it, but that's precisely what he does. The music artists and girlfriends, love affairs and interactions, and broken hearts and mended hearts, are described as only an Irishman interested in his chosen career can do. He does this through some interwoven vignettes, some amusing and some heart and soul wrenching, but all significantly engaging. The natural movement of his Cork brogue shines through in every his reports, as he explains to about various strap mates and their piccadillos, plus some shady managers and brokers (some decent plus some not so good.) Cahal spins wonderful yarns about the band's vacations through Ireland and Europe in a beat-up old van which taken through their equipment from one booking to the next, and about their adventures and misadventures en route. Spoiler alert: which great tale of a Corkman's revenge on the reprehensible German membership owner. Anybody that has ever played out in or danced to the beat of an Irish showband has to pay attention to this book. Apart from that, however, it is a superb listen in its own right and really should charm to anyone who likes a story of a young man's musical dreams and problems. It's a general tale, superbly chronicled.
