Stories of the Jazz Time is a wonderful, sobering, thought-provoking, and downright wondering assortment of 11 of F. Scott Fitzgerald's brief stories, shared after his first two books - This Area of Paradise (1920) and The Beautiful and Damned (1922) - but before The Great Gatsby (1925). In Stories of the Jazz Time, Fitzgerald takes on the secret and confusion of love: from Southern temptations ("The Jellybean") to humorous ("The Camel's Back") to poignant ("The Lees of Happiness") to heartbreakingly cruel ("O Russet Witch") to gay-but-tempered in post-World Conflict I NY, using its dark undertones of alcoholism, communism, a liberal press, and the treating returning veterans (May Day). Fitzgerald moves from the real world and will take the listener into the fantasy of any gemstone that is, actually, how big is a pile ("The Diamond as large as the Ritz"), with echoes of H. G. Wells and rough government authority traveling into the report. But, sticking to fantasies, Fitzgerald also snacks the listener to two plays (Porcelain and Green and Mr. Icky) that provides smiles and some good laughs to the listener's ears. It is hard to categorize "The Inquisitive Tale of Benjamin Button" except to say that the listener of the audiobook who have seen or found out about the recent movie of the same name should not - must not - expect anything like that. About all you need to learn about Benjamin Button is the fact his birth and life were not normal. In "Tarquin of Cheapside", Fitzgerald will try out his inner Shakespeare, with an Elizabethan setting and heroes that take the listener down dark London avenues and into a rather unexpected but gratifying conclusion. And if London of the 16th century is not enough color for the listener of the audiobook, then "Jemina, the Hill Woman" will transfer you deep into the Kentucky hills, where family feuds over moonshine and card games bring two lovers together in one hot romance.
