In The Five Orange Pips, a young Sussex gentleman called John Openshaw explains to the strange storyline of his uncle Elias Openshaw, who returned to England after residing in the United States as a planter in Florida and portion as a colonel in the Confederate Military. His uncle commences receiving threatening characters inscribed "KKK" and including five orange pips. He is killed shortly thereafter. The work of unraveling this sordid transatlantic unknown falls to Holmes and his trusty companion, Dr. Watson. The fifth of the 12 experiences in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, this is also one of only two Sherlock Holmes brief experiences where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help.
