Semyon and a man, along with three other ferrymen, live out their days and nights on a desolate riverbank in Siberia, after being exiled using their countries for various crimes. Their environment is freezing frigid and barren, providing little or nothing about which to be happy. However, Semyon seems quite happy with his life, arguing that if he desires nothing he'll never be disappointed. The son, on the other palm, is unpleasant and dreams that his partner and mother will soon come visit him. Semyon warns the son that he'll not make it through in exile if he starts to expect things, using for example a gentleman who became overtaken by wishes while in exile. As the son grapples with his new life, the gentleman from Semyon's cautionary tale will come, complicating his thoughts about his exile even more.
