Twelve-year-old Alf Smith trembled with enjoyment when the four cowboys rode past him as he walked home from institution. This is Illinois farming country and he had never seen a real cowboy. The top Mexican saddles, the tall boots with the jingling spurs, and the pistols strapped on their sides, these were just like the Texas cowboys he had read about in catalogs and papers. Alf hurried home to share with his parents, but his enjoyment soon considered horror when he arrived to get the farmhouse engulfed in flames. Later, when the fire had burned up itself out, friends and neighbors found his parent's ashes in the bed room. Everyone thought the fire was accidental, but Alf discovered certain valuable things were missing from the rubble. He suspected the four cowboys robbed and murdered his parents, but by the time he convinced the neighborhood sheriff, it was too later. The cowboys were nowhere found. Nine years go and Alf is still troubled by his suspicions of that tragic day. He chooses to go to Texas and look for the murderers. Alf starts his voyage with one clue; all the cowboys acquired red stars on their boots and may have been in Hood's Texas Brigade through the Civil War. Along the way, Alf sees more hints, but he also sees love and excursion looking forward to him. A drive on a Mississippi riverboat, a search for buried treasure, a lovely young girl caught in a life of prostitution, and a cattle drive to Dodge City are only a few of them. During Alf's long voyage to vengeance, he must face many problems but first he must differ from a boy crying over the grave to a man inclined to dispense justice along with his gun.
