Richard Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was a English author of detective tales, often starring the forensic investigator Dr. Thorndyke. He is often acknowledged with having invented the inverted detective account (a crime fiction where the commission rate of the crime is described at the beginning, with the storyplot then explaining the detective's attempt to solve the puzzle.) Lots of the Dr. Thorndyke tales require genuine, but often quite obscure, factors of clinical knowledge, from disciplines such as tropical medicine, metallurgy, and toxicology. The Magic Casket describes a classic circumstance for Dr. Thorndyke. It explains to the storyplot of a typical and apparently quite worthless metal casket, which conceals a mystical secret which nearly costs a young girl her life.
