A richly evocative and important book in what happens to a Virginia family that must come to conditions with their slave-owning history as the Civil Battle approaches and an abolitionist trips their plantation, tossing it into turmoil and eventually mailing the family western. It is 1855. The thousand-acre Dickinson plantation on the Virginia-Kentucky border is run by two brothers - Benjamin, who is the owner of the land, and John, a circuit-riding Methodist preacher who handles the land and the sales of cotton and brandy. Whenever a naturalist arrives requesting questions about parrots and plant life, he's invited to stay - but his real objective is to spread maps, compasses, and kitchen knives to the slaves, who then begin to escape, creating chaos on the plantation and bitterness between your brothers. We follow half of the family as they mind for the Kansas Territory, and we follow one of the runaway slaves as he trips to independence in Canada. Both journeys are full of electrifying incident, near escapes, and the astonishing beauty of undefiled America. Throughout, the personas cope with eternal vicissitudes and the pleasures of family and friends, and sometimes loneliness, but they must all finally come to a reckoning with America's original sin: slavery.
