Two highly smart and well informed men, Professor Ebor and then Dr. Laidlaw, learn the material of the Tablets of the Gods, and although these details is short enough to be on two ordinary-sized tablets, it is enough to induce absolute notion in its veracity and absolutely destroy trust in the reader. Yeah, that is fairly scary. You will discover no monsters in the story, only Forbidden Knowledge - which, evidently, is Forbidden with justification.
