Tom Fuller - a scrupulously honest fellow, a person of amazing physical strength, and owner of any savage horses, Rusty, that he together could tame - is generally seen as a half-wit. He has been summarily fired out of every job he has ever endured and even comes to respect himself as failing. He makes yet another try when he is employed on as a blacksmith's assistant by Boston Charlie. Finally this is a job that Tom is capable of doing successfully, and his soul soars. Oliver Champ, who prevents at the smithy to acquire his wagon horses newly shod, is impressed by Tom's potential. Champion also identifies Tom as the boy of the overdue Washington Fuller, a renowned gunfighter. Boston Charlie, definately not being impressed by this revelation, is outraged and fires Tom, insisting that he leave at once. Champion calls for this newfound chance to suggest that Tom, who in addition to his physical strength is also an excellent shot, should become his bodyguard. Devoid of any alternative, Tom allows the offer. It is definitely a decision manufactured in haste, as Tom soon discovers that Champ is new to the Western world, that he is an escaped convict from a jail in the East, and that he has come all this way in search of a master lawbreaker, Henry Plank, the person actually in charge of the robbery that Champ was imprisoned. Now Champ desires Tom to lead him through unfamiliar country to get his revenge.
