Huddy Marr, the proprietor of Bluff City Pawn shop in Memphis, is good at what he does indeed: he has learned jewelry, he has learned weapons and guitars. However the community is changing: A blood vessels bank is set to open across the street from the retail space he leases from his brother Joe, and Huddy needs to move to a less seedy part of town. A pawn shop should stay right on the advantage of seedy. Whenever a longtime client dies, his widow phone calls Huddy to come appraise his considerable weapon collection. If he can purchase up the weapons, Huddy knows he is able to make a killing, possibly change his fortunes for good. But he needs cash up front, and then for that he needs Joe. Soon the restless youngest, Harlan, is also included - they could use the manpower to move the haul - and little by little the brothers' old family dynamics reassert themselves. There may be trouble inherent in these wares. There may be trouble inherent in this family. And there is something inherent to Memphis...something which means a big change of fortune can't come easy. Stephen Schottenfeld's first book is a masterful depiction of the city, an enterprise, and a family group. It is a study of course and law, ownership and value, loyalty, betrayal, and blood vessels; the one which gathers electric power and resonates long after it's done.
