This is the report of David Wilkerson, the man who presumed against the chances that God could do great things in the turned down and dismissed of New York City, who refused to stop on those on the pavements even when that were there given up on themselves, and who found in the eye of the medicine lovers and gang customers what others failed to see - the love of Jesus Christ. But who was David Wilkerson? Many Christians don't really know. More often than not, we found the fruits of his faith in God as opposed to the man himself. When Wilkerson transferred to NY from rural Pa in 1958 to confront the gangs who ran the pavements, he was a slim, 120-pound man. After the initial promotion that brought him in person with some of the most dangerous young men of the city, he basically flew under the radar of the advertising, using the Word of God and a little of tough love to help women and men of the street escape the destructive spiral of drugs and violence. Wilkerson was always the real deal, full of enthusiasm and conviction, not enthusiastic about what others said was the "right" or political move to make. Wilkerson later founded the changing times Square Cathedral, now a non-denominational mega-church of 8,000 customers, to this day a crossroads for those battling sin, drugs, and pornography, and a location where the meaning of Christ is reviewed. He created the faith-based program Teen Challenge to wean lovers off drugs, and then World Challenge, dedicated since its beginning to promoting and distributing the Gospel throughout the world. Both will have branches worldwide, carrying on the work that God commenced in the life span of 1 man who presumed. David Wilkerson was a man of faith who respected God would give him what he had a need to enter a world of crime and killing. He was a man of conviction who took the goal God provided him and marched forwards without ever before looking back. And he was a man of eye-sight who cannot be shaken from his values - sometimes even though counseled often. David Wilkerson was the preacher of New York City.
