The Faith-Promoting Series started in 1879 with the publication of this book, My First Quest. In those days George Q. Cannon, who was simply a member of the First Presidency, desired to produce a series of books that would both teach faith and other important gospel ideas as well as be interesting enough that youngsters would be happy to read them. The results were some of the most important and widest read books in the early-LDS cannon. The series totals 17 volumes. This audiobook describes some of the activities that Chief executive Cannon acquired as a missionary in the Hawaiian islands 1850 to 1853. He expresses: "Whenever a youngsters, it was my fortune to reside in the family of Chief executive John Taylor. It had been my chief delight in those days to listen to him and other Elders relate their activities as missionaries. Such interactions were very exciting to me. They made a profound impression after me. The days which they spoke were days and nights of poverty when Elders traveled without handbag or scrip among odd people who have been ignorant of the ideas, and way too many of these were ready to mob and persecute. They traveled by faith, and were pioneers for the Lord in odd lands, and He was their only reliance. Their missions were abundant with instances of His electricity in their behalf. What I been told strengthened my faith and increased the desire in my heart to be always a missionary. No calling was so commendable in my eye as that of a standard-bearer of the gospel. "The idea which prompts me to create My First Quest is the fact that perhaps it may have the effect upon some of the youngsters of Zion that the recitals of faithful Elders acquired after me." It really is a powerful bill of your faithful missionary, as relevant today as it was in 1879, especially with the explosion of elders and sisters joining the mission field following Thomas S. Monson's landmark announcement of the adjustment of missionary ages in 2012.
