The Playground was part of the first hardcover release of Ray Bradbury's renowned work Fahrenheit 451, released in 1953. In the tale, Charles Underhill is a widower who will do anything to protect his young boy Jim from the horrors of the playground - a playground which he and the guy go by daily and the tumult of which, the activity, brings back to Charles the anguish of his own years as a child. The playground, like years as a child itself, is a headache of torment and vulnerability; Charles concerns his sensitive boy will be damaged there just like he almost was so a long time before.Underhill's sister Carol, who may have moved directly into help raise the young guy after his mom passed on, feels in different ways. The playground, she is convinced, is preparation forever, Jim will survive the knowledge she seems, and he will be the better for it and more equipped to cope with the rigor and responsibility of adult living.Underhill is trapped between his own fear and his sister's invocation of reason and seems paralyzed. A inexplicable boy calling out to him from the playground, and appears to know all too well why Underhill will there be and what the source of his agony really is. A mysterious Administrator also lurks to whom the peculiar guy directs Underhill. An arrangement can be made perhaps - this is what the boy tells Underhill. Perhaps Jim can be spared the playground, but of course, an alternative must be found.
