This hour-glass-shaped slice of american Idaho is anchored by bustling Boise and the Treasure Valley locations of Nampa and Caldwell on the south, by the inland seaport city of Lewiston on the north. In-between, the fertile areas of the Treasure Valley, called for the earthly treasures growing there in irrigated plethora, give way to the interesting jumble of mountains chopped up by profound valleys. Around the region's eastern border, the arid foothills above Boise give way to the slopes of the Payette National Forest. Car touring here's so spectacular that you might never bypass to more active adventuring. The Payette Waterways, Hells Canyon, and Clearwater Canyons Scenic Byways fall within this area. Each paths through country rich in history and abounding in natural beauty. Progress planning is usually not essential for a Salmon River day float from Riggins or for a hike in the Payette or Boise National Forest. Except in isolated Hells Canyon, the conveniences of modern life are seldom a long way away. Boise and other I-84 corridor locations offer amenities that tend to be longer on comfort than on atmosphere. Elsewhere, the restaurants, lodgings, shops, and such assume a resort-flavored rusticity that matches the river-running, walking, fishing and backpacking. This area's jumbled mixture of valleys, rivers, and lakes creates vistas of breath-catching theatre.
