A bighearted dystopian novel about the corrosive effects of dread and the redemptive ability of love. By the end of the 21st century - in a changed America - the groups of convicted felons are analyzed for a set of genetic markers. Kids who test positive become compulsory wards of the state - removed from their homes and lifted on "Goodhouse" campuses, where they figure out how to reform their darkest thoughts and impulses. Goodhouse is a feral place - part jail, part boarding school - and today a radical spiritual group, the Holy Redeemer's Cathedral of Purity, is intent on destroying each campus and purifying every child with flame. We see all of this through the sight of James, a transfer scholar who viewed as the radicals establish flame to his old Goodhouse and everyone he'd ever before known. In addition to changing to a fresh campus with new rules, James now has to contend with Bethany, a brilliant, medically fragile girl who would like to save him, and her dad, the school's sinister director of medical studies. Soon, however, James realizes that the biggest risk might already be there, inside the fortified wall surfaces of Goodhouse itself. Partly based on the real story of the 19th century Preston University of Industry and the boys who lived and passed on in its halls, Goodhouse explores questions of personal information and free will - and what this means to check the limitations of human stamina.
