Mental health problems is the sort of thing we can't stand to talk about. It generally does not reduce effectively to simple alternatives and happy final results. So instead, too often we reduce folks who are mentally ill to caricatures and spirits, and simply pretend they don't exist. They actually can be found, however - figures suggest that one in four people suffer from some type of mental illness. And then there's their friends and family members, who keep their own marks and restless thoughts, and who see no safe destination to talk about the impact of mental health problems on the lives and their loved ones. Many of these people are resting in churches week on week, suffering in stigmatized silence. In Troubled Intellects Amy Simpson, whose family understands the stress and bewilderment of mental health problems, reminds us that individuals with mental health problems are our neighbours and our siblings in Christ, and she shows us the path to loving them well and learning to be a church that adores God with whole hearts and whole souls, with the strength we have and with thoughts that are whole as well as thoughts that are stressed.
