John Wisden, at his top known as "The Little Question", was a key person in the Great britain cricket team who in 1859 sailed over the Atlantic on the world's first international cricket tour. In 1864, after his retirement, Wisden printed the first release of the booklet that would make his name immortal. He printed out "full and accurate results" along with essential factual statements about the Derby, the St. Leger, the university rowing complements "and other Interesting Information", including potted histories of the Wars of the Roses. The 1864 release is now appreciated at anything up to 25,000, and Wisden Cricketers' Almanack has been printed continuously ever since - not for nothing is it known as "the cricketer's bible". The Almanack has, despite some close shaves, never skipped per year. In 1937 it was just 48 hours from liquidation, and in the next World Conflict a German bomber establish fire to the business's headquarters, destroying its documents. And yet in some way, the yellowish (since 1938) booklet has maintained its antique, robust character. It is a labour-of-love assortment of documents for cricket obsessives, but also a hearty eccentric. It loves to count the number of wides in a season, but also delights in relating tales from far-flung pavilions. Throughout the revealing to of Wisden's report, we also view the annals of British, and world, cricket. The booklet is a home window onto the game's most charismatic character types, its high tips, lows and politics storms. In The Little Question, Robert Winder traces the central role the overall game has enjoyed in nationwide life for so long. The book's 150th anniversary in 2013 is the ideal time to inform the extraordinary report of Wisden's - and cricket's - trip from Victorian times to the modern world. New every year, it feels as if it has been with us for ever.
