His subject is a well-documented historical simple fact: a man named Arnaud du Thil could pass for just two years as Martin Guerre, deceiving villages, neighbours, friends, family, and even the wife of Martin Guerre with similar success, even to the point of becoming the daddy of two children by Martin Guerre's wife. The uncanny resemblance between the two men and the amazing sang-froid of the imposter created a predicament that has fascinated historians, playwrights, novelists and moviemakers for well more than 400 years. Needless to say Dumas, the dramatist and novelist, cannot help embellishing the task of Dumas, the historian. He gives us words and activities that cannot possibly participate the historical record from views that are as effectively histrionic as they are undocumented. However, all his melodrama is well based on his background, and he certainly makes an excellent story out of his materials. Dumas collaborated upon this, as he frequently have in his works, with Fournier, who worked with him on several of his dramas as well. Nonetheless it is clearly Dumas who has the final say upon this work, much like all the other works in this series. Enjoy!
