On the face of it, this is the tale of Dave Smart, business studies lecturer, as he leads a group of three colleagues on the tour of finding to the Smiling Disk superstar system, 19 light years from home. Their main purpose is to investigate business practice on Kalista-mm, the larger of the system's two planets, and collect materials for Dave's new e book, 'Doing Business on Other Planets'. Visits to a sulphur mine, an old-established lender, and a refreshments company supply the Earthlings amazing insights in to the life-style of aliens who have developed along relatively different lines from us. It is not only they have big moustaches and white bloodstream, or that they drink sulphuric acid solution and lay eggs. The inhabitants of Kalista-mm are the epitome of political incorrectness, and are disarmingly honest about it. But is this all you can find to it, or does the author's domicile in Thailand hint at even more terrestrial satire in the story? Is Kalista-mm an allegorical Asia? Certainly the Kalistan-mms involve some Asian conversation characteristics, and the humans' confusion and awe when offered means of doing things so different from people they're used to on the planet is remarkably comparable to Westerners' bafflement when met with methods in Asia. In any event, the main benefit of studying a means of life different from ours is that it educates us more about ourselves. The group's observations provide plenty of scope when planning on taking cruel swipes at many of things we hold precious: federal government, big business, justice, democracy, local climate change, science, religious beliefs, and do-gooders generally. It all adds up to a hilarious jaunt around a little-known quadrant of the galaxy (or the world) and a gratifying dig at many of our own sacred cows.
