Globe is a deceased cinder beyond the dense clouds. On the terraformed Venus, the land is ruled by savage crops and the even more savage beasts that victimize them, while monsters out of headache swim though the globe-girdling seas. Mankind huddles in domed underwater Makes, living a purposeless static presence - dedicated to pleasure but destined for oblivion later if not sooner. Only the Free Companions, the mercenaries who struggle proxy wars for the Makes, live on the surface of Venus. Their warships course the seas, fighting one another in struggles to choose victory or beat for just one day, life or loss of life for a few individuals. The Free companions live till they perish with the searing excitement of threat, and their deeds bring pleasure and color to the bored residents of the Makes; but Mankind is doomed unless something changes. Few are willing to associated risk their lives for that change, battling both terrifying environment and the ruthless oligarchs for whom the status quo means an eternity of luxury. But there are a couple of courageous visionaries in the Makes and in the Free Companies where loss of life is a means of life!
