Who are we, and how do we relate to one another? Luciano Floridi, one of the leading characters in contemporary idea, argues that the explosive developments in Information and Communication Solutions (ICTs) is changing the answer to these fundamental individual questions. As the boundaries between life online and offline breakdown, and we become seamlessly linked to each other and ornamented by smart, responsive objects, we all have been becoming built-into an "infosphere". Personas we adopt in social marketing, for example, supply into our 'real' lives so that people begin to live, as Floridi sets in, "onlife". Following those led by Copernicus, Darwin, and Freud, this metaphysical shift represents nothing significantly less than a fourth revolution. "Onlife" defines increasingly more of our day to day activity - just how we shop, work, learn, look after our health, captivate ourselves, perform our relationships; just how we interact with the worlds of legislation, fund, and politics; even just how we conduct war. In every section of life, ICTs have grown to be environmental forces that are creating and transforming our realities. How do we ensure that people shall reap their benefits? What exactly are the implicit hazards? Are our solutions going to allow and empower us, or constrain us? Floridi argues that people must expand our ecological and moral approach to cover both natural and man-made realities, putting the 'e' in an environmentalism that can package effectively with the new problems posed by our digital solutions and information world.
