From his humble origins in Sumter, South Carolina, to his prominence on the Washington, D.C., politics scene as the third highest-ranking Democrat inside your home of Staff, U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn has led a fantastic life. In Blessed Activities, Clyburn explains to in his own inspirational words how an African-American youngster from the Jim Crow-era South could beat the chances to accomplish great success and become, as Chief executive Barack Obama details him, "one of a few of people who, when they speak, the whole Congress listens." Born in 1940 to a civic-minded beautician and a fundamentalist minister, Clyburn commenced his ascent to leadership at age 12, when he was elected president of his National Association for the Growth of Colored People (NAACP) youngsters section. He broke barriers through peaceful protests and steadfast values in equality and justice. Of his success Clyburn says he was "blessed with nurturing parents, a supportive family, and dedicated friends." But, he added, "my life was not only about knocking down doorways and lowering barriers. I spent a while marching in the roadways and occupying the inside of South Carolina jails." As the civil rights leader at South Carolina State College, as individuals affairs commissioner under John C. West and three subsequent governors, so when South Carolina's first DARK-COLORED congressman since 1897, Clyburn has established an extended and impressive record of general population leadership and advocacy for individuals rights, education, traditional preservation, and economical development. Clyburn was elected to Congress in 1992. Serving as co-president of his freshman class, he increased quickly through the ranks and was elected chair of the Congressional African american Caucus in 1999 and House Democratic Caucus vice chair in 2002. 3 years later he was unanimously elected chair of the Democratic Caucus.
