The Polity is under attack from a "melded" AI entity with control of the lethal Jain technology, yet the attack seems to have no coherence. When one of Erebus' wormships eliminates large numbers on the world of Klurhammon, a high-tech agricultural world of no real tactical relevance, agent Ian Cormac is delivered to investigate, though he's secretly struggling to regulate a new capability no individual should possess... and starting to question the motives of his AI experts. But Erebus' disorders aren't so indiscriminate, in the end, and could perfectly herald the end of the Polity itself....
