There are a few things which even the closest camaraderie cannot survive.... Neighbours Edie Kelsey and Lil Horton have been friends for more than twenty years, sharing the joys and sorrows of rough lives as the wives of anglers in Grimsby. So it was no real surprise that their children were close and that Edie's boy, Frank, and Lil's princess, Irene, would show up in love and marry at a young age. However the declaration of battle in 1939 changes everything. Frank will go off to combat, and Irene and baby Tommy, along with Edie's youngest boy, are delivered to the countryside for security. With Edie's man, Archie, angling the dangerous waters in the North Sea and princess Beth in London doing "important battle work", Edie's family is torn aside. Camaraderie sustains Edie and Lil, but tragedy comes after, and there's concern that Beth seems to have disappeared. But it is Irene's return, during the VE day get-togethers, that sends shockwaves through the family and threatens to rip Edie and Lil's camaraderie apart forever.
