Housebound by inclement weather at a villa near Geneva in 1817 in what has become known as, "THE ENTIRE YEAR Without A Summertime", a gifted band of writers passed the time by reading then-popular ghost stories and contemplating "the nature of the theory of life." Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Shelley's partner Mary, who was simply then only nineteen, all agreed to each compose ghost stories. Mary Shelley's history came to her throughout a restive night: "I observed the hideous phantasm of a guy stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine motor, show indicators of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital movement." The result of her eye-sight, which she later publicized as a complete length novel, became the most well-known and powerful horror story of all time. This performance by Julie Harris gives a chilling reading of the original work as advised by the young Mary Shelley. Curl up on a unhappy evening, with equipment and lighting low and perhaps a surprise raging outdoors and return to the 19th Century to see the traditional evocation of the macabre.
