Chthon was Piers Anthony's first shared book in 1967, written during the period of seven years. He began it when he was in the US Army, so it has a long prison collection that is similar to that experience, being dark and grim. It features Aton Five, an area man who commits the offense of falling deeply in love with the dangerous, alluring Minionette and is therefore condemned to fatality in the subterranean jail of Chthon. It uses flashbacks to show how he came to know the Minionette, and flash-forwards to show how he dealt with her after his get away from from prison. The author respect this as perhaps the most intricately structured novel the knowledge fantasy genre has seen. It was a contender for prizes, however, not a winner.
