Ten-year-old Aderito has been helped bring from america to the bankers of a lovely river in Homoine, Mozambique. There he befriends a young girl named Victoria, and then for a short time their years as a child is promising. Soon the assault that is raging across the country makes its way to Aderito's doorstep, and both children are abducted by rebels and obligated to learn the ways of trained killers in a warfare they barely understand.
