The Pubbers, 10 gifted public misfits, set out one night time to explore a couple of steam tunnels beneath their campus, finish up captured by aliens, and are carried by spaceship to another planet. Hoping to return home, they pool their talents to construct a period machine. The get away from plan is uncovered, and the Pubbers learn that building the device is why they were kidnaped to begin with. Five thousand years back, they had guaranteed their captors they would build the device to save their competition from extinction. To get home they must unravel what they've done in the past, figure out a plan for future years, and get home within an alien spacecraft, all while eluding two warring races. Simple, right?
