Three Men in a Sail boat by Jerome K. Jerome tells the story of three friends and their dog after they decide to have a boating trip across the Thames River. Taking a boat across the river was a favorite way to invest a few days at that time, but most people who indulged in the activity probably didn't have as adventurous a period as J, George, Harris, and Montmorency the fox terrier when they came up after the perfect way (at least, it seems like this at that time) to invest their summer holiday seasons. Experiencing a serious case of overwork, even though all of them avoid the activity as much as possible, they retain a motorboat and travel across the river between Kingston and Oxford. As they travel along, past picturesque little towns and villages, they marvel at the loveliness of the British countryside in the summer. Their journey is not without incident, however, and it soon becomes clear that these four are as adept at boating because they are at any other kind of manual labor, and when the weather takes a convert for the worse they make a decision that their days of unusual food concoctions, poor banjo playing, and swan fighting with each other must come to an end. The book was released in 1889 and was at first meant to be considered a travel guide for that particular part of the Thames, but it soon took on a more comedic tone and today it regularly appears in top 100 lists of the funniest literature ever.
