Jack Wade, a boasts adjuster for California Open fire and Life Mutual INSURANCE PROVIDER, is one of the better arson investigators around. He's a guy who knows flame, who can read the traces it leaves behind such as a roadmap. When he's called in to examine a unique claim, the tracks of the flame simply tell him that something's wrong. After having a devastating blaze tears by way of a wing of the house, it's only normal that Vale would file an insurance case. But a $3 million case is almost never normal, especially not when it's filed within time of the horrific fatality of the owner's young and beautiful better half. The Region Sheriff's Office investigator, Brian "Accidentally" Bentley, has declared the flame, well, unintentional - induced by Mrs. Vale's fainting during intercourse with a bottle of vodka and a lit cigarette - although a careful look at the evidence tips to something more sinister. When Jack starts his analysis, he pulls on his skill, experience and large stubbornness to discover the reality of what's happening, but each step leads him further into a predicament that's becoming increasingly dangerous.
