Of all dramatic occasions that transpired through the Civil War, the finish of the warfare in Apr 1865 brought possibly the most remarkable of them all, plus they arrived in such quick succession that it is still hard to believe nearly 150 years later. On Apr 2, the long siege of Petersburg by Ulysses S. Grant ended with Robert E. Lee's Military of Northern Virginia finally having its line shattered, forcing Lee to retreat and give up Richmond along the way. Lee's battered military began stumbling toward a rail depot in the hopes of staying away from being encircled by Union pushes and picking up much-needed food rations. While Grant's military continued to run after Lee's retreating military westward, the Confederate government sought to escape over the Deep South. On Apr 4 President Lincoln came into Richmond and toured the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
