To paraphrase the notice from the translator, The Celebrated Offences of Alexandre Dumas père had not been written for children. The novelist has spared no language - has minced no words - to describe violent views of violent times. Within this, the 14th of the series, Dumas, the novelist-historian, brings his storytelling skills to a famous subject: the backdrop of one of the most famous of People from france lawsuits, centering around the trick abduction of Bernard de la Guiche, later count up of Saint-Geran, from the child-bed of his mother, Suzanne de Longaunay, by the marquis de Saint-Maixant - a notorious womanizer, schemer, and probably murderer. Dumas offers us the complete tale, basing his story on well-established historical sources, from the time when the marquis first insinuated himself into the family to the outcome of the lawsuit contesting Bernard's individuality and legitimacy as the heir of the La Guiche fortune. It is a tale of impressive perfidy, cruelty, and betrayal of trust. Needless to say Dumas the dramatist and novelist cannot help embellishing the task of Dumas the historian. He offers us words and activities that cannot possibly participate the historical record from views that are as effectively histrionic as they are undocumented. However, all his melodrama is well based on his record, and he certainly makes an excellent story out of his materials. Dumas may have collaborated upon this, as he frequently have in his works, with other authors. Nevertheless, it is evidently Dumas who gets the final say upon this work, as with the rest of the works in this series. Enjoy!
