Despite the fact Ancient Egyptian history happened such a long time ago and protected an immense span of the time, Egyptologists are able to learn an incredible amount about different times through reading the surviving texts now preserved in museums across the world and in the many temples and tombs in Egypt. Egyptologists know that the language of old Egypt went through many stages and was written in a variety of different scripts, such as the well-known hieroglyphic script and the cursive editions known as hieratic and demotic. But this was not necessarily so, and the key to unlocking everything occurred with one groundbreaking breakthrough. Until about 200 years back, the writing of the old Egyptians was an enigma to the world, but that modified when an ancient Egyptian monument known today as the Rosetta Natural stone was learned (or rediscovered serendipitously) by French soldiers in Egypt in 1799. Now one of the very most famous monuments in the world, the Rosetta Natural stone is a dark granite stela that was inscribed with texts in Greek and two different scripts of the old Egyptian language: demotic and hieroglyphs. Stelae like the Rosetta Natural stone were monuments that old Egyptian kings inscribed texts on, usually to proclaim a struggle success or a legal decree. Because the kings who commissioned stelae to be built presumed that the information they included were important, these were usually large, as is the situation with the Rosetta Natural stone. Although damaged over time, the Rosetta Natural stone still stands almost four feet tall and over two ft huge, and it formerly stood probably between five and six ft tall (Andrews 1982, 12). The breakthrough of the Rosetta Natural stone finally provided researchers with a means of reading the Egyptian language based on a knowledge of the Greek translation. The historical importance of the Rosetta Natural stone as , the burkha source of incidents throughout a turbulent period in Egyptian history cannot be minimized, but its true importance was as an instrument that scholars used to unlock the language of old Egypt. This is not lost on the Europeans at all, as the breakthrough and succeeding translation of the Rosetta Natural stone not only opened the door for the introduction of modern Egyptology but also became an important section through the period known as the Enlightenment.
