Deep Down Dark is a narrative nonfiction reserve by journalist and novelist Héctor Tobar. The reserve tells the story of 33 miners caught in a caved-in mine in North Chile starting on August 5, 2010. They remained underground for 69 times. The miners' personal reports of their months caught in the mine are complemented by stories of the particular miners' family members and the general public experienced on the top during the ordeal as well as by an in-depth recounting of the successful rescue work. The San José copper mine in North Chile was over a century old, and the miners working there have been aware that it was not in optimum condition. The men complained about the conditions to their general administrator, Carlos Pinilla, but he was not responsive. Still, they needed money, and mining jobs were relatively profitable.
