Dublin is the Republic of Ireland's capital and greatest city, called from the Irish dubh linn, signifying "black pool". The name comes from the actual fact that the site of the city was previously a dark-colored, slimy expanse of mud by which the River Liffey flowed sluggishly to the ocean. It now has a nice environment on the east coastline of the Irish Sea, looking out over Dublin Bay, with an extended, sandy shoreline to its north. Granite mountains form the southern boundary of the state, and the city is bisected by the River Liffey. It's a cultural city with theaters, cinemas, museums and galleries, and many traditional sites worth seeing. It also has an excellent range of outlets, restaurants, pubs, and golf clubs plus all sorts of accommodations. Louth, the smallest state on the island, is on the east coastline, on the border halfway between Dublin and Belfast. It's called after Lugh, the fantastic god of the Celts, and its Cooley peninsula was the legendary home of the massive Finn McCool and the environment of Ulster's most significant saga, the Táin. That's the epic folk story of the hero Cúchullain, the Red Branch Knights of Ulster, wicked Queen Maeve of Connaught, and the mighty Brown Bull of Cooley. Despite its size, Louth offers a fantastic choice of activities - sailing and scuba diving, sea and river fishing, horse riding, hill walking, climbing, golf, exploring historical sites, and great traditional hospitality in its many pubs, restaurants, inns, guesthouses, and hotels. Among the many interesting places to visit is the site of the Battle of the Boyne, which evolved Irish history and influences situations even today. Known as "your garden of Ireland," Wicklow has wonderful landscapes, with mountains, wooded valleys, and lakes.
